I’ve got a quick question…with Sophie Blackmore

Sophie Blackmore, The Happy Marketer

In her own words, Sophie is a marketer; quite a good one! She works with small businesses and entrepreneurs to give them clarity when it comes to their marketing strategy. She has heaps of experience and provides a range of different services

If you haven’t come across Sophie yet, find her and follow her, you won’t regret it. She never fails to make me laugh (find her TikToks) and always shares valuable advice. To say she’s brilliant is probably a bit of an understatement.

Who are you and what’s your super power?

I’m Soph. I’m a marketer, mum of three, TikTok junkie and coffee lover. My super power is my relentless positivity! (and I can confirm that Sophie’s always really positive!)

What inspires you?

Ooo. Good question! Music. Trees. The ocean. So many wonderful humans it is impossible to name one.

The best piece of advice has been to charge for work upfront.

How do you deal with burnout?

I get outside – the fresh air always gives me renewed energy. If I’m getting grumpy my husband leaves my trainer by the door as hint I should go for a run.

What’s the worst piece of advice you got given as a freelancer?

I’ve been lucky in that all the advice I’ve been given has been helpful. Can I turn that question on its head? The best piece of advice has been to charge for work upfront.

When you’re not working, what do you like doing?

I run, read books, as a mum there’s not a lot of downtime! I love going for a walk and ending up at the pub for tea.

What’s on repeat on your spotify/itunes acc?

I love all sorts of music. I’ve listened a lot to Spaceman by Sam Ryder recently as we had all followed his journey on tiktok for ages. My go to if I am feeling down though is a bit of 90’s dance music!

Invest in some training and look for a mentor. I taught myself a lot initially, but those two things made a huge difference to my work and how I felt about it.

Who’s your dream client?

Probably Lego. Mainly cos it would impress the kids 😉

What’s the best advice you could give someone wanting to break into your industry?

Invest in some training and look for a mentor. I taught myself a lot initially, but those two things made a huge difference to my work and how I felt about it.

What book are you reading at the moment?

Work wise I have just read ‘Good Strategy, Bad Strategy’ by Richard Rummelt. Non-work I’ve just started ‘The seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo’ by Taylor Jenkins Reid.

And would you recommend it?

The marketing book yes. It is quite academic in style though so I found it easier to digest on audible. The other one I’m only two chapters in so I’ll let you know when I’m done!

What are your plans for the future? If any.

I have a bucket list I write for each decade. The list before I reach 50 includes

  • try glass blowing
  • go to zipline world in wales
  • see the northern lights

Plus lots more. I don’t know if I’ll do them all but its fun to think about what could be around the corner.

What’s your go to coffee?

I used to be a latte girl but have found lately I am more of a cortado drinker. More caffeine I think is mainly why.

What’s your go to cake?

Love a lemon drizzle. Or a carrot cake.

What’s your ultimate favourite 90s song?

Backstreet Boys – I Want It That Way

What would your theme song be?

“Don’t Stop Me Now” By Queen

Tell me your favourite joke

What do you call a man and a woman that go fishing?

Rod and Annette!

If you could be any friends character who would you be and why?

I’d like to say Phoebe for her free spirit, but suspect I’m more of a Monika 😂

Crazy Rich Asians is my guilty pleasure movie, what’s yours?

The Devil Wears Prada. I LOVE that movie!

And finally, who do you think I should speak to next?

Am wondering if you have already spoken to Amy Nolan, but if not she’d be a great choice. Also Ross Stevens.
