What do you think about when you’re in the car stuck in traffic? I look at the road signs.
Or when you’re waiting in the queue for a lovely cup of coffee? I look at the chalkboards.
What about when you’re at the shopping centre passing the travel agents? I look at the holiday brochures all lined up.
Do you know what I’m thinking about? Graphic Design.
My name is Bhavini and I’m a Graphic Designer
I don’t just do Graphic Design, it is a big part of who I am. Yes, hands up, I am a Graphic Design geek.
So whilst you’re looking longingly at the holiday destination photos imagining yourself on the sunbed with an espresso martini or a pina colada, I’m looking at the fonts, placement of images, spacing, the spine, the finish and thickness of the paper. Basically, every little decision that has been poured into that one single brochure to make it just perfect.
When I’m stuck in the car, I’m looking at the road signs, appreciating the simplicity of the illustrations, the choice of universal icons, the shapes and the colours that are recognised by millions of people each day without a second thought being given.
I spend a lot of my time thinking about and drinking good coffee, it’s part of my daily routine. I do love it when there’s a well crafted brand behind the good coffee, or classic chalkboard which someone out there has taken the time and skill to put together… handcrafted the imagery and descriptions, so that it’s just so!
Graphic design is everywhere, no really…
We all appreciate great graphic design right? We might not always notice it, and we might take it for granted. Like a fire exit sign at the office, an app button, or the beautifully designed typography used throughout Killing Eve (you can read more about it here). Or even the logo in the middle of your steering wheel, things we use every day have all been specially crafted by a designer out there.
Graphic Design is everywhere, literally under your nose all day long.
Great design is everywhere, unfortunately so is not so great design!! Like Mary Berry can appreciate the perfect opera cake, I can appreciate the perfect print job. The look, the feel, the smell (too much?). The satisfaction that comes from taking delivery of the perfect piece of print, designed, laid out and now in ink.
What do I know about graphic design?
So, what makes me the authority on whether something is well or not so well designed? Well to be honest I’m not the rule maker around here, but I like to think I know my onions. As a seasoned Graphic Designer I have the foundations on which I have built (with just a few) years of experience, I follow the design press and industry news, I know the design process, I know the print process, I know how it works and why it works, but I also understand the creativity and the behind the scenes necessities. I can visualise the end result, which is what I want to share with you. I can help you share your message!
